1842 1850 1855 1884 Arthur Leopold Mayall Photographed Princes Sons Younger Albert

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, taken by the renowned Victorian photographer Oscar Rejlander working under the name of Mayall in 1861, captures a tender moment between two younger sons of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert: Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, on the right, and Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, on the left. Both princes were born to the British monarch and her consort in the latter half of the 19th century, with Prince Arthur born on May 1, 1850, and Prince Leopold on April 7, 1855. At the time of this photograph, Prince Arthur was 11 years old, and Prince Leopold was just 6. Their youthful innocence and close bond are palpable in this image, as they gaze at each other with affectionate smiles. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of their early childhood, before the tragic events that would shape their lives: Prince Arthur would go on to marry Princess Alexandra of Denmark and serve in the British Army, while Prince Leopold would marry Princess Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont and become the King of Belgium. Tragically, both princes experienced great loss in their lives: Prince Arthur's wife, Princess Alexandra, died in 1925, and he passed away just five years later in 1931. Prince Leopold, meanwhile, lost his wife, Helena, in 1924, and he died in 1884 at the young age of 29, following a hunting accident. This photograph, therefore, stands as a precious testament to their youth and the unbreakable bond they shared as brothers.
