EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time during the tumultuous history of Albania, as Prince Wilhelm of Wied (1876-1945) and his family, Princess Sophie of Schonburg-Waldenburg (1873-1932), Princess Marie Eleonore (b. 1914), and Prince Carl Victor (b. 1916), pose for the camera in 1913. Prince Wilhelm, a German prince, was chosen by the European Great Powers to rule over the newly independent state of Albania, following the Balkan Wars. His brief reign, which began in April 1914, was marked by revolts and an attempted coup. In the photograph, Prince Wilhelm, dressed in military uniform, gazes intently into the distance, while his wife, Princess Sophie, tenderly holds their youngest child, Prince Carl Victor. Their eldest daughter, Princess Marie Eleonore, stands beside them, her expression serious and determined. The family's regal bearing and elegant attire reflect their noble heritage, while the backdrop of the Albanian landscape adds a sense of exoticism and adventure. Despite the challenges he faced during his reign, Prince Wilhelm remained committed to building a modern and stable Albania. He introduced reforms in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, and worked to establish diplomatic relations with neighboring countries. However, his efforts were cut short when he was forced to abdicate in September 1914, following a military coup. The Wied family left Albania, and Prince Wilhelm went on to serve in the German army during World War I. This photograph offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in Albanian history, as well as a poignant portrait of a royal family facing the complexities and challenges of ruling a newly independent nation.
