EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming photograph, Prince Paul of Greece, later King Paul I of the Hellenes, is depicted as a young boy of 21 years old, wearing a popular sailor suit that was fashionable among children in Victoria and Edwardian Europe. The image, taken in 1905, shows Paul in a carefree moment as he holds a ball in his hand, likely preparing to play a game. Prince Paul was the youngest son of King Constantine I of Greece and Princess Sophie of Prussia. Born in 1901, he grew up in a royal household that was known for its grandeur and tradition. Despite his privileged upbringing, Paul's childhood was marked by tragedy, as his older brother, Crown Prince Alexander, died in a riding accident when Paul was just 12 years old. This event made Paul the heir to the Greek throne. The sailor suit that Paul is wearing in this photograph was a common choice for boys' clothing during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The suit, which featured a short jacket with notched lapels, collared shirt, and trousers with stripes or navy blue color, was imported from Britain and became a popular fashion trend in Europe. As Paul grew up, he continued to serve the Greek monarchy, eventually becoming King Paul I in 1947 after his father's abdication. He ruled until his own death in 1964. This photograph, taken over a century ago, offers a glimpse into the life of a young prince and the fashion trends of his time.
