EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken on the 24th of June in 1922, the Prince of Wales, later known as King Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor, is seen in a light-hearted moment as he catches a bouquet of roses while leaving Paddington Station in London. The popular prince had just returned from a successful royal tour of England, where he was greeted by cheering crowds, having been away for several months. The occasion for this joyful welcome back was Alexandra Rose Day, a charity event established by the Prince's grandmother, Queen Alexandra, to commemorate the anniversary of her arrival in Britain. The day was also intended to raise funds for various charities through the selling of roses. Accompanying the Prince of Wales on this day were his father, King George V, the Duke of York (later King George VI), and Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester. The quartet had just arrived at the station after a day of engagements in the city. As the carriage drove through the streets, the Prince, in good spirits, leaned out the window and playfully caught a bouquet of roses that was thrown in his direction. The image captures a moment of pure joy and connection between the people and their beloved prince, a testament to the enduring popularity of the royal family during this historical period. This photograph is an important piece of British history, showcasing the Prince of Wales' return to England and his participation in a beloved charity event. It is a poignant reminder of the power of community and the impact of charitable initiatives, even as we celebrate the lighter moments in history.
