EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Prince William of Wied, also known as Wilhelm Friedrich Heinrich, is depicted as the Prince of Albania. Born on February 24, 1876, in Austria, Prince William held the title of Sovereign Prince of Albania from March 7, 1914, to September 3, 1914. During this brief reign, he was referred to as "mbret" in Albania, which translates to "king." Prince William's tenure as the ruler of Albania began when he was invited by the Albanian nationalist leaders to help establish an independent Albanian state. He accepted the offer and was officially proclaimed as the Prince of Albania on March 7, 1914. However, his reign was short-lived as he was forced to leave for exile on September 3, 1914, due to the political instability and external pressures. Despite the brevity of his reign, Prince William is an essential figure in Albanian history. He is often referred to as Skanderbeg II in homage to Skanderbeg, the national hero of Albania. Skanderbeg was a medieval Albanian leader who successfully resisted the Ottoman Empire's invasion for 25 years. By adopting this title, Prince William aimed to connect himself with the rich history and traditions of Albania. The photograph captures Prince William in a formal attire, wearing a military uniform with decorations on his chest. The background is blurred, drawing the attention to the Prince's regal presence. The image serves as a reminder of a significant moment in Albanian history when the country attempted to establish its independence and identity on the international stage. Prince William's reign officially came to an end on January 31, 1925, when Albania was declared a republic. However, his legacy continues to be celebrated in Albania as a symbol of national pride and resilience.
