Prince Leopolds engagement

Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany (1855-1884) and his future wife, Princess Helen of Waldeck-Pyrmont in 1881. The fourth son and eight child of Queen Victoria, Leopold was the most academic of her sons but suffered from haemophilia. The Queen was keen for him to remain at home with her as her assistant, but Leopold attended Oxford in 1872 and began to take an increasingly active role in public life. He had two children with Helen, Princess Alice of Albany and Prince Charles Edward of Albany (later Duke of Saxe-Coburg) who was born posthumously. Leopold travelled to Cannes in 1884 on a recuperative holiday to ease his joint pain. He slipped and fell in the Yacht Club and died later that evening

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this beautiful photograph, Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany (1855-1884) and his future wife, Princess Helen of Waldeck-Pyrmont (1861-1922), are seen in their engagement portraits, taken in 1881. The fourth son and eighth child of Queen Victoria, Leopold was known for his academic prowess, but he suffered from haemophilia, a condition that caused him significant joint pain. Despite the Queen's desire for him to remain at her side as her assistant, Leopold attended Oxford University in 1872 and began to take an increasingly active role in public life. The couple's engagement was an important moment in the history of the British monarchy. Leopold and Helen had two children together: Princess Alice of Albany (1883-1885) and Prince Charles Edward of Albany, later Duke of Saxe-Coburg (1884-1954). Tragically, Leopold's health began to decline during a recuperative holiday in Cannes in 1884. He slipped and fell at the Yacht Club and later died that evening. Leopold's academic background set him apart from his brothers, making him the most intellectual of Queen Victoria's sons. Despite his suffering from haemophilia, he attended Oxford and began to take on public responsibilities. His engagement to Princess Helen marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life, one that would ultimately be cut short. The photograph captures the joy and excitement of this moment in their lives, a moment that would be remembered in the annals of royal history. The future Duke and Duchess of Albany are seen here in formal attire, with Leopold wearing the Order of the Garter and Helen wearing the Order of the Crown of Württemberg. The photograph is a testament to the love and commitment of the couple, and serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life.
