Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany (1855-1884) photographed in 1872. Leopold was the fourth son and eighth child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The most academic of the Queens sons, he was also a haemophiliac, meaning that Victoria was keen to keep him at home as her assistant. In 1872, he went to Oxford, despite the Queens protestations where he befriended some of the finest minds in the country, including Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll). Leopold became increasingly active in public life, supportinig a wide range of social, medical and artistic causes. He happily married Princess Helena of Waldeck-Pyrmont in 1881 but died in 1884 after a fall, while recuperating in Cannes

In this photograph taken in 1872, Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany (1855-1884) is depicted in formal attire, exuding an air of intelligence and refinement. The fourth son and eighth child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Leopold was known for being the most academic of the Queen's sons. Due to his hemophilia, Victoria was keen to keep him at home as her assistant. However, in 1872, against her protestations, Leopold went to Oxford University where he befriended some of the finest minds in the country, including Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll. Leopold's time at Oxford marked a turning point in his life. He became increasingly active in public life, supporting a wide range of social, medical, and artistic causes. In 1881, he happily married Princess Helena of Waldeck-Pyrmont. Tragically, in 1884, after a fall while recuperating in Cannes, Leopold died at the young age of 29.
