EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a young and dashing Prince George, the fifth child and fourth son of King George V and Queen Mary. Born on January 20, 1902, Prince George was destined for a life of royal duty and distinction. In December 1934, Prince George made headlines when he married the elegant and graceful Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark. The couple's union was celebrated by the British public, and they went on to have three beautiful children: Princess Alexandra, Prince Michael, and Princess Helena. In 1936, following the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII, Prince George was created Duke of Kent and assumed a more prominent role in the royal family. In 1939, he joined the Royal Navy and served actively during World War II. Tragically, on August 25, 1942, while on a training flight, the Duke's plane crashed near Snailum, Kent. He was only 41 years old. This historic photograph, taken in the early 1920s, offers a glimpse into the life of a young prince who would later become a respected and beloved member of the British monarchy. The image of Prince George, with his confident gaze and smart military uniform, speaks to his strength, determination, and sense of duty. The backdrop of the photograph, with its ornate frame and intricate detailing, adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to the image. This photograph is an important historical document, capturing a moment in time that is both personal and significant to the history of the British monarchy. It is a poignant reminder of the life and legacy of Prince George, Duke of Kent, and the impact he had on the world around him. Image Courtesy of Mary Evans Picture Library (www.maryevans.com)
