EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a moment in time from the late 19th century, featuring Prince George of Wales, later King George V (1865-1936), surrounded by his cousins, the children of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg. Seated to Marie's right is Princess Victoria Melita of Edinburgh, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and then Grand Princess Cyril of Russia. Behind Marie is her younger sister, Princess Beatrice of Edinburgh, later Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg. To George's left shoulder is his first cousin, Princess Alexandra of Edinburgh. At the center, a young and hopeful George, who would later become King of England, gazes at Marie, whom he had hoped to marry when she reached the right age. However, the Russian Duchess of Edinburgh, Marie's mother, disapproved of a match between first cousins, and George's offer was refused. Seated to the right is Prince Alfred, the eldest and only son of the Duke of Edinburgh, who was to be the next Duke of Saxe-Coburg before his premature death in 1899. The children's ages range from Marie, who was born in 1875, to Beatrice, who was born in 1894. This photograph is a testament to the complex web of European royal relationships and the intricacies of royal family dynamics during this era. This photograph, taken around 1891, is an important historical document, showcasing the Edinburgh family at a pivotal moment in time.
