Framed Photos from Mary Evans Picture Library
Prince George and Princess Marina of Greece
George, Duke of Kent (1902-1942), fourth son of George V and Queen Mary. Despite a military education, he became the first member of the Royal family to work for the Civil Service. In 1938, he married Princess Marina of Greece with whom he had three children (this card is likely to mark their engagement in 1935). Often considered the most intelligent of George Vs children, the outbreak of World War II prevented him from taking up the post of Governor-General of Australia. He was tragically killed on active service, when his Sunderland boat plane, en route to Iceland, crashed into a mountainside in Northern Scotland. Date: circa 1935

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant and timeless photograph, we find Prince George, Duke of Kent (1902-1942), fourth son of King George V and Queen Mary, and his future bride, Princess Marina of Greece, captured in the tender moments leading up to their engagement in 1935. The Duke, known for his intelligence and military education, was the first member of the British Royal Family to pursue a career in the Civil Service. His unconventional choice was a testament to his innovative spirit and commitment to public service. Princess Marina, a member of the Greek and Danish royal families, was a stunningly beautiful and gracious woman, who would become the Duchess of Kent upon their marriage. The couple's union was a significant one, as it brought together two European royal houses and strengthened diplomatic ties between Greece and the United Kingdom. The image of the Duke and Duchess-to-be exudes a sense of happiness and anticipation, as they prepare to embark on their lifelong journey together. Their engagement was a cause for celebration, and the joyous occasion was undoubtedly felt by the people of both Greece and the United Kingdom. Unfortunately, the Duke's life was cut short when he was tragically killed on active service during World War II. On August 8, 1942, while en route to Iceland in a Sunderland flying boat, the plane crashed into a mountainside in Northern Scotland, claiming the life of the Duke and nine other crew members. The loss was deeply felt by the British people, and a state funeral was held in London to honor the Duke's memory. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a love story that was cut short by the unforgiving tides of war. The image of the Duke and Princess Marina, their eyes locked in a loving gaze, stands as a testament to their enduring bond and the hope that love can transcend even the most difficult of circumstances.
