EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Prince Christopher of Greece, the third son of King George I of Greece, is seen with his new bride, Nancy Leeds, formerly known as Nonnie May Stewart. The image captures the moment of their joyous union, which took place on January 1, 1920, in Switzerland. Nancy Leeds was an American heiress who came from a wealthy background. She had previously been married twice before, making this her third marriage. Her first husband was the wealthy American businessman, William K. Vanderbilt II, and her second was the British diplomat, Charles R. Marriot. Prince Christopher and Nancy's engagement had been a long-standing one, spanning over six years. Nancy's fortune proved to be a significant help to the Greek royal family during a financially challenging period in their history. Despite her previous marriages, Nancy was well-respected in high society circles. After her marriage to Prince Christopher, she was known as Princess Anastasia of Greece. However, her happiness was short-lived as she tragically passed away just three years after her marriage due to cancer. The photograph is a testament to their love story, which transcended societal norms and brought together a prince and an American heiress. It is a fascinating glimpse into the history of royalty and society during the early 20th century. This image is a historical treasure, capturing a moment in time that is often overlooked in the annals of royal history. It is a poignant reminder of the complexities of love, wealth, and the human condition.
