EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Crown Prince Carol of Romania (later King Carol II) is seen with his fiancée, Princess Helen of Greece, in 1921. The union between the Romanian royal and the Greek princess came as a surprise to many, given Prince Carol's chequered past. Just two years prior, in 1919, Carol had secretly married a Romanian girl named Joana Lambrino. This clandestine marriage was kept hidden from the public and the Carol's family, including his wife, Queen Elisabeth of Wied, and his father, King Ferdinand. Carol's decision to marry Helen was met with skepticism and disapproval from the Romanian royal family and the public. The union was far from a happy one, as Helen struggled to adapt to life in Romania and the constant scrutiny of the press. The couple's marriage was also complicated by Carol's continued involvement with Joana Lambrino, who continued to demand financial support from him. Despite these challenges, Carol and Helen were married in a grand ceremony on December 10, 1921. The union marked a new chapter in the life of the Romanian monarchy, but it was one that was fraught with controversy and turmoil. The couple's rocky relationship would ultimately contribute to the downfall of the Romanian monarchy and the rise of communism in the country. This photograph captures a moment of hope and optimism in the face of scandal and uncertainty. The future King and Queen of Romania stand together, smiling for the camera, as they prepare to embark on a journey that would shape the course of Romanian history. The past may have been complicated, but the future held promise, even if it was uncertain.
