This striking photograph captures Prince Arthur of Connaught (1883-1938), the youngest son of the Duke of Connaught, in his military uniform. The image, taken in July 1914, just prior to the outbreak of World War I, showcases Prince Arthur's regal presence and unwavering dedication to his duty as a soldier. Born on May 1, 1883, in Marlborough House, London, Prince Arthur was the fifth child and fourth son of the Duke and Duchess of Connaught. Raised in the British royal family, he was educated at Wellington College and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. In 1902, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Royal Dragoon Guards, and later served in the Second Boer War in South Africa. As the tensions between Europe's great powers began to escalate in 1914, Prince Arthur, then a major in the Grenadier Guards, was ready to answer the call to duty. The photograph captures him in his prime, with a confident and determined expression. The intricate details of his military uniform, adorned with medals and insignia, speak to his long and distinguished military career. Sadly, Prince Arthur's military service was cut short when he was diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1916. He was forced to retire from the army and spent the remainder of his life in various European sanatoriums. Prince Arthur passed away on January 16, 1938, at the age of 54. This historical photograph offers a glimpse into the life of a young prince and his commitment to his country and military service, just before the world was plunged into the chaos of war.
