EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Prince and Princess Gustaf Adolf of Sweden, shortly after their return from their honeymoon in 1932. The newlywed couple, who met during a state visit to Denmark, were united in marriage on October 20 of that year at Coburg, Germany. Princess Gustaf Adolf, formerly known as Princess Sybille of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, was the daughter of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and a granddaughter of Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, as well as a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Prince Gustaf Adolf, too, was a great-grandchild of Queen Victoria, through his mother who was formerly Princess Margaret of Connaught. The royal couple's union marked a significant moment in the history of both Sweden and Denmark, as they were closely related through their royal lineages. The Danish and Swedish monarchies had a long and complex relationship, with Queen Victoria serving as a link between the two families. This photograph, with its tender and romantic composition, offers a glimpse into the personal lives of these historic figures and the deep-rooted connections between the royal houses of Europe. Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Sybille's marriage was a momentous occasion, not only for the Swedish and Danish royal families but also for the broader European monarchy. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the rich history and enduring relationships that have shaped the European royal landscape.
