Prince Albert playing tennis

Prince Albert, Duke of York, the future King George VI (1895-1952), was a keen tennis player in the 1920s; in July 1920 with his partner Louis Greig he won the RAF doubles competition. But their entry into the Wimbledon Championships in 1926 proved unhappy for the Duke. The Club had placed the match on Court Number Two and the size and proximity of the crowd was too much for his nerves; his match was lost in straight sets

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Prince Albert, Duke of York, in the midst of a tennis match during the 1920s. Known for his passion for the sport, Albert teamed up with his partner Louis Greig to win the RAF doubles competition in July 1920. Their success continued as they entered the prestigious Wimbledon Championships in 1926. However, their experience at the famed tournament proved unfortunate. The Club had assigned their match to Court Number Two, a decision that brought an unwelcome distraction for the Duke. The large and boisterous crowd, which was a common occurrence at Wimbledon, proved to be too much for his nerves. Ultimately, the Duke and Greig lost their match in straight sets, marking an unhappy end to their Wimbledon debut. This historical image, sourced from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the personal life of the future King George VI, who ruled from 1936 to 1952, and his love for tennis during a time when the sport began to gain widespread popularity.
