Prince Albert, Duke of York, later King George VI (1895-1952), as a midshipman on HMS Collingwood, in the summer of 1914. Prince Albert was the only child of George V, other than Prince Edward, who was old enough for active service. Unlike his brother, he was not protected and in May 1916, as a sub-lieutenant on Collingwood, he took part in the Battle of Jutland. His spells at sea however, were constantly interrupted by stomach trouble adn in 1917 he required an operation for a duodenal ulcer. In 1918 he transferred to the newly formed Royal Air Force

1952 Active Brother Collingwood Constantly Formed Interrupted Jutland Lieutenant Midshipman Newly Operation Protected Required Spells Stomach Transferred Trouble Unlike 1895 Albert Duodenal Ulcer

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a young and determined Prince Albert, Duke of York, later King George VI, aboard HMS Collingwood in the summer of 1914. At the age of 21, Prince Albert was the only son of King George V old enough for active service, unlike his brother, Prince Edward. In contrast to his brother's protected status, Prince Albert joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman and took part in the historic Battle of Jutland in May 1916, serving as a sub-lieutenant. However, his spells at sea were constantly interrupted by stomach trouble, and in 1917, he underwent an operation for a duodenal ulcer. In 1918, Prince Albert transferred to the newly formed Royal Air Force, marking a significant shift in his military career. This evocative image offers a rare glimpse into the life of a future monarch during a pivotal moment in history, showcasing his courage and resilience in the face of adversity.
