EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to a traditional Devon cider farm in the year 1850, as depicted in this evocative photograph from Mary Evans Picture Library. The image captures the essence of the cider-making process, with the mill situated on the right-hand side of the frame. The mill, a vital component of the production, was used to crush the apples into a coarse mash. On the left side of the photograph, we see the press, where the crushed apples were carefully built into a square heap. This 'mock' or 'cheese' of apples was then pressed to extract the sweet, golden cider juice. The press, a historical and essential piece of equipment, would have been operated by a large wooden beam and a screw mechanism, slowly squeezing out the juice. The atmosphere of this photograph is one of authenticity and tradition. The rustic setting, with the trees in the background and the wooden structures, transports us back to a simpler time. The process of pressing cider was once a communal activity, with families and neighbours coming together to help with the harvest and production. Cider-making has a rich history in Devon, with the region being renowned for its production of this delicious, fermented apple drink. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing us with a valuable insight into the methods and traditions of a bygone era. As we admire the image, we can almost hear the sound of apples being crushed and the cider flowing, reminding us of the deep-rooted connection between the people of Devon and their cherished cider-making heritage.
