EDITORS COMMENTS
This image from the Mary Evans Picture Library, titled "Presses 1690," offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of early printing technology. The photograph showcases two intricately designed presses from the year 1690, a time when the printing industry was undergoing significant advancements. The press on the left is a typical example of a hand press, which was the most common type of printing press used during the 17th century. It consists of a large, wooden frame with a flat bed where the inked printing plates are placed. A large screw mechanism is used to apply pressure to the paper, which is then pressed against the inked plates to transfer the ink and create an impression. The operator would use a large, wooden lever to apply the pressure, making the process labor-intensive and time-consuming. The press on the right, however, is a more advanced version known as a "screw-press" or "screw-press with a rack and pinion." This press features a rack and pinion system, which allows for more consistent and even pressure to be applied to the paper. This results in a higher quality print, with fewer imperfections and a more uniform appearance. The screw-press also allows for larger print runs, making it a more efficient and cost-effective option for larger printing projects. This photograph provides a unique window into the history of the printing industry and the technological innovations that shaped it. The intricate details of the presses, from the wooden frames to the metal screw mechanisms, offer a tangible connection to the past and a reminder of the important role that printing played in the dissemination of knowledge and the shaping of history.
