The newborn Prince Edward of York, later Prince of Wales, then King Edward VIII, then Duke of Windsor, being presented to H.H. Asquith, then Home Secretary at White Lodge, Richmond Park when he was born on June 23rd 1894. It was traditional for a government minister to be present to witness the birth of a royal heir although the tradition was dispensed with before the birth of the present Prince of Wales. The scene depicts Asquith gazing awkwardly at the baby, held by his mother, the future Queen Mary, while his father, the future George V and his maternal grandparents, the Duke and Duchess of Teck look on

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, the newborn Prince Edward of York, later known as Prince Edward, Prince of Wales, then King Edward VIII, and finally the Duke of Windsor, is presented to H.H. Asquith, the Home Secretary at the time, following his birth on June 23, 1894, at White Lodge in Richmond Park. The tradition of a government minister being present at the birth of a royal heir was an old one, although it had been dispensed with before the birth of the present Prince of Wales. The scene depicts an awkward moment as Asquith gazes at the tiny Prince, held by his mother, the future Queen Mary, while his father, the future George V, and his maternal grandparents, the Duke and Duchess of Teck, look on with pride and curiosity. The future King Edward VIII is dressed in a white lace christening robe, a traditional garment worn by royal infants for their baptism. The photograph captures the significance of the moment as the future monarch is formally introduced to the government representative, symbolizing the connection between the monarchy and the state. Despite the formalities, there is a sense of warmth and tenderness in the image, with the loving gaze of the parents and the proud expressions of the grandparents. This photograph is a testament to the rich history and traditions of the British monarchy, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. It is a reminder of the importance of continuity and tradition in the face of change, as well as the enduring bond between the monarchy and the people of the United Kingdom.
