In this aerial photograph taken in August 1920, the industrial heart of Birkenhead, Merseyside, comes into sharp focus. The scene is dominated by the prominent Queens Buildings, with St James Church standing proudly on its roundabout and Corporation Street stretching out to the left. In the foreground, the West Float of Wallasey Pool is home to two graving docks, where ships undergo extensive repairs and maintenance. These docks were once adjacent to Brasseys Canada Iron Works, a historic site where materials and rolling stock for Canada's Grand Trunk Railway were manufactured in the late 1800s. The industrial landscape continues with the massive flour mills, including Ocean Flour Mills, which in the 1920s were milling more grain than any other place in Europe. The mills stand tall and proud, their silos and chimneys casting long shadows over the water. In the distance, the East Float, Mersey, and Liverpool's Three Graces can be made out.
