St Hilary, detail of 3660852, 1526-30 (fresco)
3660857 St Hilary, detail of 3660852, 1526-30 (fresco) by Correggio, (Antonio Allegri) (c.1489-1534); Duomo, Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, Parma, Emilia-Romagna, Italy; (add.info.: Protector saints of Parma: St. John the Baptist with the lamb, St. Hilary with a yellow mantle, St. Thomas (or Joseph) with an angel carrying the martyrdom palm leaf, and St. Bernard, the sole figure looking upwards.
Below the feet of Jesus, the uncorrupt Virgin in red and blue robes is lofted upward by a vortex of singing or otherwise musical angels. Ringing the base of the dome, between the windows, stand the perplexed Apostles, as if standing around the empty tomb in which they have just placed her. In the group of the blessed can be seen: Adam and Eve, Judith with the head of Holofernes. At the centre of the dome is a foreshortened beardless Jesus descending to meet his mother.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing detail of the fresco "St Hilary" by Correggio, located in the Duomo, Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta in Parma, Italy. The artwork forms part of a larger composition depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. In this particular section, we are introduced to St. Hilary, adorned with a vibrant yellow mantle. Alongside him are other protector saints of Parma: St. John the Baptist with a lamb, St. Thomas (or Joseph) accompanied by an angel carrying a martyrdom palm leaf, and St. Bernard gazing upwards. Beneath Jesus' feet lies an uncorrupt Virgin Mary dressed in striking red and blue robes being lifted upward by a swirling vortex of singing angels. Encircling the base of the dome are perplexed Apostles reminiscent of those gathered around an empty tomb where they have just placed her. Amongst the blessed figures depicted within this breathtaking scene are Adam and Eve as well as Judith holding Holofernes' severed head. At its center is a foreshortened beardless Jesus descending to meet his mother. The overall masterpiece portrays "The Assumption of the Virgin" meticulously frescoed between 1526 and 1530 by Antonio Allegri, better known as Correggio. This extraordinary work captures both religious devotion and artistic brilliance within its intricate details.
