'London', GWR poster, 1940s Featured Railway Posters Print

'London', GWR poster, 1940s

Poster produced for Great Western Railway (GWR) to promote train services to London. Although the style of the artwork would suggest a date in the 1940s, the area shown near Blackfriars Bridge was damaged during World War II. This damage is not shown in the poster. It is possible that the artist, in seeking to produce a promotional poster setting forth the capital in its best aspect, and in keeping with the spirit of optimism and the desire to move forward from the horror of war, chose not to depict the buildings as damaged. Artwork by Frank Henry Mason (1876-1965), who painted marine and coastal subjects and, in addition to designing railway posters, was also involved in engineering and shipbuilding

'Waterloo Station - War', SR poster, 1948 Featured Railway Posters Print

'Waterloo Station - War', SR poster, 1948

Poster produced for Southern Railways (SR). This is one of two posters commissioned as part of the celebrations that took place in 1948 to mark the centenary of the opening of Waterloo Station. The poster commemorates 'a centenary of uninterrupted service during war and peace'. Artwork by Helen McKie, who studied at the Lambeth School of Art and exhibited at the Paris Salon and at leading London galleries. In addition to designing posters for the Southern Railway (SR), she also wrote and illustrated booklets and other publicity material and designed uniforms and upholstery. In 1939 she was asked to decorate two new coaches for the cross-Channel service. Dimensions: 1016 mm x 1270mm

'The Devon Belle', SR poster, 1947 Featured Railway Posters Print

'The Devon Belle', SR poster, 1947

Poster produced for Southern Railway (SR) to promote rail services between the West of England and Waterloo Station, London. The poster shows 'The Devon Belle', an all-Pullman locomotive with an observation carriage travelling at speed through a light-coloured, nearly monotonal landscape. The service ran on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays and called at Sidmouth Junction, Exeter Central, Ilfracombe and Plymouth Friary. Artwork by Marc Fernand Severin, who was born in Brussels and lived in England from 1932 to 1940 and from 1945 to 1949, working first as Art Director at an advertising agency and then as a free-lance artist, advertising designer and book illustrator. Dimensions: 1016 mm x 1270 mm
