EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the distinguished features and intellectual intensity of Sir Charles Leonard Woolley (1880-1956), a renowned archaeologist and director of the British Museum Expedition in Mesopotamia. Born in London in 1880, Woolley is best known for his ground-breaking excavations at Ur in Mesopotamia during the 1920s. Woolley's career began in 1900 when he joined the British Museum as an assistant in the Department of Assyriology. In 1919, he was appointed as the director of the British Museum Expedition to Mesopotamia, a position he held until 1923. During this time, he carried out significant excavations at Al-Ubaid and Tell el-Armarna, but it was his work at Ur that would bring him international acclaim. The excavations at Ur, which began in 1922, were a turning point in the study of ancient Mesopotamia. Woolley and his team unearthed the Royal Cemetery of Ur, which contained over 1,500 tombs dating back to the 3rd millennium BCE. Among the discoveries were the famous Royal Tombs of Ur, which contained richly decorated vessels, gold jewelry, and other treasures. Woolley's work at Ur revolutionized the study of ancient Mesopotamia and established him as a leading figure in the field of archaeology. He was knighted in 1923 in recognition of his contributions to the field. Today, Woolley is remembered as a pioneering archaeologist who opened new avenues of research and deepened our understanding of ancient civilizations. This portrait, taken in the 1920s, captures the essence of a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the uncovering of history's mysteries.
