Portrait of Christopher Pinchbeck

Undated head and shoulders mezzoprint portrait of Christopher Pinchbeck by Isaac Whood. Pinchbeck (c.1670 - November 18, 1732) was a London clockmaker and maker of musical Automata. He was born in Clerkenwell but worked in Fleet Street. Probably his name was derived from Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire. In the 1700s he invented the alloy Pinchbeck a cheap substitute for gold. He made an exquisite musical clock, worth about 500, for Louis XIV, and a fine organ for the Great Mogul, valued at 300. His eldest son, also named Christopher (1710 - 1783) became Kings Clockmaker by appointment to George III: among his timepieces is an important astronomical clock made for the King, now in Buckingham Palace. EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking head and shoulders mezzotint portrait depicts Christopher Pinchbeck (c.1670-1732), a renowned London clockmaker and inventor of musical automata. Born in Clerkenwell but based in Fleet Street, Pinchbeck's name is believed to have originated from Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire. In the early 1700s, he made history by inventing an alloy called Pinchbeck, a cheaper alternative to gold. His exceptional craftsmanship led him to create an exquisite musical clock valued at around 500 for King Louis XIV and a fine organ worth 300 for the Great Mogul. The portrait was produced by the skilled hand of Isaac Whood, capturing the essence of Pinchbeck's intelligence and creativity. Pinchbeck's eldest son, also named Christopher (1710-1783), followed in his father's footsteps and became King's Clockmaker by appointment to George III. Among his notable creations is an essential astronomical clock now housed in Buckingham Palace. This mezzotint print offers a glimpse into the rich history of Christopher Pinchbeck, a master of his craft who left an indelible mark on the world of clockmaking and automata. The intricacy and detail of this portrait, produced by the artistic talents of Isaac Whood, serve as a testament to the innovative spirit and ingenuity of this remarkable figure in history.
