The Confederate flag, once proudly flying over the island fortress, has been replaced by the Stars and Stripes as Union warships bombard the harbor in the background. The strategic capture of Port Royal, located at the entrance to the St. Johns River, marked a significant turning point in the American Civil War. The Union Navy, under the command of Rear Admiral Samuel F. Du Pont, had been planning the attack for months. On November 7, 1861, the Union fleet of over 20 warships and gunboats, anchored off the coast, began a relentless bombardment of Forts Walker and Beauregard, the Confederate strongholds guarding the entrance to Port Royal Sound.
