Campbell's Bluebird hydroplane crashed at Coniston Water in January 1967 while attempting to break a water speed record. *25/10/02: Bluebird is brought ashore at Coniston Water in the Lake District. Campbell died when the boat crashed January 1967 as he attempted to break his own water speed record of 276 mph. An inquest opens into his death later today

BBC producer Mike Rossiter and widow of Donald Campbell, Tonia Bern-Campbell stand together as Campbell's jet-powered boat Bluebird is brought to shore at Coniston Water in the Lake District, amid an operation to raise the craft. * Campbell's Bluebird hydroplane crashed at Coniston Water in January 1967 while attempting to break a water speed record. 28/5/01: Human remains were discovered close to the area where Campbell's powerboat, Bluebird, was recovered in Coniston Water, police said. The find was made by divers at around 1pm, police said. The remains were taken to Furness General Hospital, Barrow-in-Furness, and a post mortem will be carried out. The speedboat was recovered from the lake in March in the glare of massive publicity. Campbell, 45, died 34 years ago when he sped across the water at 297mph before spinning out of control

Another speed king of the future? Young Donald Campbell and his father, Sir Malcolm Campbell with Donald's electric motor car. Sir Malcolm Campbell was holder of 13 world speed records in the 1920s and 30s in the famous Bluebird cars and boats, and his second wife. This background would shape Donald Campbell's entire character, and indeed his life. He broke eight absolute world speed records himself on water and on land in the 1950s and 1960s. He remains the only person to set both world land and water speed records in the same year (1964). He was killed attempting a new water speed record on Coniston Water on 4 January 1957. Date: 1932
