Bluebird

BBC producer Mike Rossiter and widow of Donald Campbell, Tonia Bern-Campbell stand together as Campbell's jet-powered boat Bluebird is brought to shore at Coniston Water in the Lake District, amid an operation to raise the craft. * Campbell's Bluebird hydroplane crashed at Coniston Water in January 1967 while attempting to break a water speed record. 28/5/01: Human remains were discovered close to the area where Campbell's powerboat, Bluebird, was recovered in Coniston Water, police said. The find was made by divers at around 1pm, police said. The remains were taken to Furness General Hospital, Barrow-in-Furness, and a post mortem will be carried out. The speedboat was recovered from the lake in March in the glare of massive publicity. Campbell, 45, died 34 years ago when he sped across the water at 297mph before spinning out of control

Sir Malcolm Campbell & Donald Campbell in toy motor car

Another speed king of the future? Young Donald Campbell and his father, Sir Malcolm Campbell with Donald's electric motor car. Sir Malcolm Campbell was holder of 13 world speed records in the 1920s and 30s in the famous Bluebird cars and boats, and his second wife. This background would shape Donald Campbell's entire character, and indeed his life. He broke eight absolute world speed records himself on water and on land in the 1950s and 1960s. He remains the only person to set both world land and water speed records in the same year (1964). He was killed attempting a new water speed record on Coniston Water on 4 January 1957. Date: 1932

Donald Campbell - Bluebird Proteus CN7 model

The Bluebird-Proteus CN7 was a Land Speed Record-breaking car, driven by Donald Campbell. This model was sold to mark the 1963 attempt at the world land speed record by Campbell at Lake Eyre, Australia, which proved ultimately unsuccessful. On July 17, 1964, Campbell set a record of 403.10 mph in the car, but this was far less than the potential of this remarkable venicle. The model is pictured with a Bluebird pennant
