Born in Riez, France, Jacques Pantaleon began his ecclesiastical career as a canon at the cathedral in Riez. He later became a Dominican friar and rose through the ranks, eventually serving as the Archbishop of Osma in Spain. Urban IV's reputation for holiness and learning earned him the papacy in 1261, following the death of Pope Clement IV. During his reign, Urban IV worked tirelessly to address the internal strife within the Church. He called for a General Council in 1263 to address the ongoing schism between the Greek and Latin Churches.
