EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, newly installed Pope Pius XII (Eugenio Pacelli) gazes solemnly out from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City on March 2, 1939. The moment captures the historic occasion of his election and inauguration as the 262nd Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, an office he would hold until his death in 1958. Born on October 2, 1876, in Rome, Pacelli was a highly respected Vatican diplomat and the Pope's secretary of state before his election. He was chosen as the successor to Pope Pius XI following the latter's death on February 9, 1939. The election took place in a time of great political turmoil, with Europe on the brink of war. The photograph shows Pacelli wearing the traditional papal robes and tiara, adorned with the triple crown and the cross of the papacy. The balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, with its ornate stonework and intricate carvings, serves as a striking backdrop to the scene. The crowd below, a sea of uplifted hats and raised hands, reflects the joy and excitement of the momentous occasion. Pius XII's papacy was marked by significant events, including the Second World War and the Holocaust. His actions during this period have been the subject of much debate and controversy. Despite this, his papacy also saw the establishment of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, the creation of the World Day of Peace, and the promulgation of the encyclical "Mystici Corporis Christi," which affirmed the doctrine of the Church's belief in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. This photograph, taken just days after his election, captures a pivotal moment in the life of Pope Pius XII, a man who would go on to shape the course of the Catholic Church during a time of great upheaval and change.
