EDITORS COMMENTS
Pompey the Great, Gaius Pompeius Magnus, stands triumphantly before the cheering crowds of Rome, having been elected Consul to popular acclaim in 70 BC. This historic moment marked the peak of Pompey's political power and military successes, which had earned him the admiration and support of the Roman people. Born into a modest family in Picenum, Pompey rose through the ranks of the Roman military, displaying exceptional leadership and strategic skills. His victories against pirates in the Mediterranean Sea and in the East against Mithridates VI of Pontus brought him immense fame and wealth. Pompey's popularity grew, and he returned to Rome in 71 BC, where he was granted a triumph, an honor usually reserved for generals who had won a military victory. However, his ambition did not stop there. Seeking more power, Pompey formed an alliance with Crassus and Julius Caesar, known as the First Triumvirate, which dominated Roman politics for several years. In this image, Pompey is depicted in the traditional toga, wearing a laurel wreath on his head and holding a scepter, symbols of his consular power. The crowd behind him, made up of common people, soldiers, and senators, reflects the broad support he had garnered throughout his career. Pompey's election as Consul was a significant event in Roman history, as it marked the first time a military commander had been elected to the position without first serving as a quaestor or aedile. This image captures the excitement and anticipation of the Roman people as they celebrate the election of their beloved leader, Pompey the Great.
