EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the tense atmosphere during the historic 1911 General Transport Strike in Liverpool, England. The image shows policemen on horseback, diligently guarding Liverpool Station, as the transport unrest continued to spread across the country. The strike began in June when two seamen's unions took action due to a range of grievances, and soon after, other transport workers joined in, making it a national issue. By August, railway workers had also joined the fray, leading to a mass demonstration in Liverpool on 13th of that month. The day began peacefully but ended in violent clashes between the demonstrators and the police. The city came to a complete standstill on the 15th of August, but negotiations eventually began, and by the 21st of August, railway workers had returned to work. This significant moment in British industrial history saw various transport companies and their workers demanding better employment conditions, recognition of their unions, and fairer wages from their bosses. The government intervened to maintain law and order, resulting in scenes like this one, where policemen patrolled the streets on horseback. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the political and industrial unrest that gripped the nation during this period.
