EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enchanting Polish actress Pola Negri, born Appolonia Chalupek, in her role as a nurse in the 1926 American film "Vendetta." Negri, who graced the silver screen during Hollywood's golden age of the 1920s, was a trailblazing figure in the film industry, known for her magnetic screen presence and seductive charm. Born on January 3, 1897, in London, Poland, Negri began her acting career in her native country before making the move to Germany in the early 1910s. She quickly rose to fame in Europe, becoming one of the most popular and successful silent film stars. In the late 1910s, Negri crossed the Atlantic Ocean to try her luck in America. She made her Hollywood debut in 1922 in the film "The Cheat," and her career took off from there. In "Vendetta," Negri plays the character of Luisa Contini, a nurse who becomes embroiled in a dangerous love triangle between two men. The film, which also starred Antonio Moreno and Louis Wolheim, was a critical and commercial success, cementing Negri's status as a leading lady in Hollywood. This photograph, taken during the production of "Vendetta," showcases Negri's striking beauty and poise as she dons the uniform of a nurse. With her hand resting on her hip, she exudes a sense of confidence and strength, making it clear that she is a force to be reckoned with both on and off the screen. Negri continued to act in films throughout the 1930s and 1940s, but her career began to decline in the 1950s. She passed away on January 1, 1987, at the age of 89. Today, she is remembered as one of the most intriguing and captivating figures of early Hollywood, and this photograph is a testament to her enduring legacy as a talented and mesmerizing actress.
