1595 1617 Alias Pocahontas Matoaka

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the enigmatic figure of Pocahontas, also known by her Powhatan name Matoaka, an iconic American Indian princess who played a significant role in the early history of the English colonization of Virginia in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Pocahontas, whose name means "playful one" or "little wanton," was born around 1596 in the Tsenacommacah confederacy, which covered present-day eastern Virginia and parts of Maryland. She was the daughter of Chief Powhatan and was known for her beauty, intelligence, and diplomatic skills. The photograph, titled "Pocahontas, alias Matoaka, American Indian Princess," is a striking example of the romanticized portrayal of Native Americans that emerged during the 19th century. The image, produced by Mary Evans Picture Library from their extensive collection, is not to be confused with the modern-day company of the same name. The photograph depicts Pocahontas in a flowing, traditional Powhatan dress, adorned with intricate beadwork and feathers. Her long, dark hair is styled in braids, and she gazes directly at the viewer with a piercing, intense look. The background is a lush, green forest, adding to the sense of mystery and otherworldliness. Despite the romanticized portrayal, Pocahontas' story is a complex one. She played a crucial role in facilitating peaceful relations between the Powhatan people and the English settlers, famously saving the life of Englishman John Smith in 1607. However, she was later taken captive by the English and married John Rolfe in 1614. She died in England in 1617, at the age of around 21, leaving behind a legacy that continues to captivate the imagination of people around the world.
