This image from the 1860s depicts Sir Roderick Impey Murchison, a renowned British geologist and president of the Royal Geological Society, in the company of Sir Reginald Scott, a prominent Australian explorer, and a native Aboriginal guide, as they examine a live platypus. The platypus, an intriguing and unique creature native to Australia, was a source of great fascination for the scientific community during this era. The trio's association with the platypus is believed to have taken place during Sir Reginald Scott's expedition to the Tasman Peninsula in 1863. Sir Roderick Murchison's interest in the platypus was not only scientific, but also personal, as he had long been a patron and supporter of the Boy Scout movement, which was founded by Lord Baden-Powell in 1907. Murchison saw the potential for the scouting movement to foster a sense of adventure and exploration in young people, much like his own experiences in the field.
