This image from the 1860s depicts Sir Roderick Impey Murchison, a renowned British geologist and president of the Royal Geological Society, in the company of Sir Reginald Scott, a prominent Australian explorer, and a native Aboriginal guide, as they examine a live platypus. The platypus, an intriguing and unique creature native to Australia, was a source of great fascination for the scientific community during this era. The trio's association with the platypus is believed to have taken place during Sir Reginald Scott's expedition to the Tasman Peninsula in 1863.
