EDITORS COMMENTS
Pius IX Returns - A Triumphant Homecoming: On April 12, 1850, after a harrowing six-year exile, Pope Pius IX made his way back to Rome, the city he had ruled since 1846. The papal states had been seized by the newly unified Italian government under King Victor Emmanuel II, forcing the pope to flee to Gaeta, a coastal town south of Naples. But with the intervention of European powers, particularly France, Pius IX was able to return to the Eternal City. In this evocative image from the Mary Evans Collection, we see the pope being acclaimed by his supporters among the populace as he makes his way through the streets of Rome. The jubilant crowd, waving flags and banners, throngs around the pope's carriage, their faces alight with excitement and devotion. Pius IX, dressed in his papal robes and wearing the tiara on his head, looks out at the sea of faces with a mixture of gratitude and awe. The scene is a testament to the deep attachment of the Roman people to their pope, who had been their spiritual leader for over a decade. It also speaks to the enduring power of the papacy as a symbol of religious and political authority in Italy and beyond. Despite the challenges and upheavals of the time, the pope's return to Rome marked a moment of hope and renewal for the Catholic Church and the city itself. This historic event, captured in this stunning photograph, remains an important chapter in the rich and complex history of Italy and the papacy. It serves as a reminder of the resilience of faith and the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity.
