EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time as the Pioneer Column, led by the visionary Cecil Rhodes and the British South Africa Company, forges ahead on their historic journey to annex the territory of Mashonaland, now part of modern-day Zimbabwe. The Pioneer Corps, a brave and determined force of settlers and soldiers, is seen crossing a stream, their faces etched with determination and resolve. The year was 1890, and the landscape before them was vast and unfamiliar. Rhodes, driven by a belief in Manifest Destiny and the potential wealth of the land, had raised the Corps to bring order and establish a British presence in the region. As they marched onward, the Pioneers faced numerous challenges, from the harsh terrain and climate to the resistance of local tribes. Yet, they pressed on, driven by the promise of a new life and the opportunity to stake their claim in this wild, untamed land. The annexation of Mashonaland marked the beginning of British rule in what would become Rhodesia, and ultimately, Zimbabwe. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the indomitable spirit of the Pioneers and the indelible mark they left on the history of this region.
