EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken at RAF Tangmere in 1937, we see a quartet of pilots from 1 Squadron, Royal Air Force (RAF), standing proudly in front of their biplane fighters. The squadron, which was formed in 1916 and was one of the oldest and most distinguished in the RAF, was based at RAF Tangmere during the interwar period. At the center of the image is Wing Commander C.W. Hill, the commanding officer of the squadron, wearing his distinctive RAF tunic and peaked cap adorned with the insignia of his rank. To his right is Flight Lieutenant E.M. Donaldson, his face serious and focused, his uniform immaculate. To his left are Flying Officer H.E.C. Boxer and Pilot Officer P.P. Hanks, both young and eager, their expressions reflecting the anticipation and excitement of being part of the RAF's elite flying corps. The pilots are standing in front of a line of Hawker Hind biplanes, which were the primary fighters of the RAF during the interwar period. The Hind was a formidable aircraft for its time, with a top speed of over 200 miles per hour and a powerful armament of eight machine guns. The pilots of 1 Squadron were among the best trained and most skilled in the RAF, and they were ready to defend their country against any aerial threat. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of the men and women who served in the RAF during the interwar period. It is a testament to their dedication and their commitment to protecting their country, and it offers a glimpse into a time when the RAF was at the forefront of aviation technology and military innovation. The photograph, taken by renowned RAF photographer Charles E. Brown, is a precious piece of history that captures a moment in time that will never be forgotten.
