After a perilous voyage from England that lasted over two months, during which they faced treacherous storms and the constant threat of scurvy and starvation, the Pilgrims were finally able to give thanks to God for their safe arrival in the New World. The Pilgrims had set sail from Plymouth, England in September of 1620, seeking religious freedom and the opportunity to build a new life in America. They had signed a compact, or agreement, to establish a community based on their shared faith and values. Their journey was not an easy one, with many passengers suffering from illness and malnutrition. But their determination and faith sustained them through the hardships. Upon landing at Provincetown Harbor, the Pilgrims gave thanks to God for their safe voyage and for the opportunity to begin anew. They held a three-day celebration, during which they offered prayers, sang hymns, and shared a communal feast. This event, which came to be known as the First Thanksgiving, marked the beginning of a new chapter in American history.
