EDITORS COMMENTS
"In this historic photograph, Swiss scientist Auguste Piccard (1896-1962) is seen reaching a record-breaking altitude of 16,201 meters (53,127 feet) during his groundbreaking ascent on May 27, 1931. Accompanied by his colleague Paul Kipfer, Piccard ascended from Augsburg, Germany, and landed in the Austrian Alps. This remarkable achievement was made possible through the use of a hydrogen-filled balloon, which allowed them to surpass the previous record of 15,778 meters (51,735 feet) set by Jean-Pierre Blanchard and John Bassett Moore in 1783. Piccard's ascent marked a significant milestone in the exploration of the Earth's atmosphere and paved the way for future aviation and space travel. The determination and innovation of Piccard and Kipfer, along with their groundbreaking technology, continue to inspire scientists and explorers around the world." This photograph is a testament to human curiosity and the relentless pursuit of knowledge.
