Rotifer worm, light micrograph

Rotifer worm. Light micrograph of the rotifer worm Platyas quadricornis. This free-swimming, aquatic micro-organism has a body which is divided into three sections. The head (top centre) possesses many cilia (not clearly seen) which surround the mouth. These are used for catching food particles suspended in the water. The rounded body ends with a short foot (lower left), on which are two adhesive " toes" (bottom), used for anchoring the animal to a substrate. Dark field illumination. Magnification unknown. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate beauty of a Rotifer worm, captured under a light micrograph. The image reveals the fascinating details of Platyas quadricornis, an aquatic micro-organism that freely swims in water. Divided into three sections, this tiny creature's head is located at the top center and is adorned with numerous cilia surrounding its mouth. Although not clearly visible in this image, these delicate hair-like structures play a crucial role in capturing food particles suspended in the water. The rounded body of the Rotifer worm culminates with a short foot positioned on the lower left side. This foot exhibits two adhesive "toes" at its bottom, which serve as anchors to secure the animal to various substrates. The dark field illumination technique used for imaging adds depth and contrast to highlight these remarkable features. While magnification information remains unknown, it does not diminish our awe for this mesmerizing specimen from nature's vast repertoire. This photograph offers insight into zoology and biology enthusiasts' world by showcasing one of nature's most intriguing invertebrates - the rotifer. Its presence among planktonic organisms further emphasizes its significance within aquatic ecosystems. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an extraordinary glimpse into microscopic life forms through their exceptional collection of images dedicated to scientific exploration and discovery.
