Doppler ultrasound scan of carotid artery stenosis

Carotid stenosis. Doppler ultrasound scan showing stenosis (narrowing) of the carotid artery in the neck. The carotid artery (red) is the main vessel supplying blood to the brain. Its normal width is seen at the lower left of the scan. The red colour represents normal smooth blood flow. At centre, a grey intrusion is seen into the arterys width. Blood flow in this area is shown in a variety of colours, indicating abnormal blood flow. The reduced width means that blood cannot reach the brain in sufficient volume, which may lead to a stroke. The narrowing may be due to a fatty deposit in the artery (atheroma) or a blood clot (thrombus). Surgery may help widen the artery. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print from Science Photo Library showcases a Doppler ultrasound scan of carotid artery stenosis, revealing the potentially dangerous narrowing of this vital blood vessel in the neck. The carotid artery, depicted in vibrant red at the lower left of the image, is responsible for supplying blood to the brain. Its normal width and smooth blood flow are evident here. However, at the center of the scan, a disconcerting grey intrusion can be observed encroaching upon the artery's width. In this area, abnormal blood flow is indicated by an array of colors. This reduction in width restricts sufficient blood volume from reaching the brain and poses a significant risk for stroke. The underlying causes behind such narrowing may include fatty deposits known as atheroma or even blood clots called thrombus. To address this condition and widen the affected artery, surgery may be required. Science Photo Library has expertly captured this visually striking representation that highlights both medical knowledge and technological advancements within healthcare. By providing invaluable insights into conditions like carotid stenosis through cutting-edge techniques such as Doppler ultrasound scans, medical professionals can better diagnose and treat vascular diseases while safeguarding patients' well-being.
