EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph taken at the iconic Cataract Hotel in Aswan, Egypt, in 1932, a group of prominent British society figures gather for a memorable moment near the colossal dam. The sun-soaked scene is graced by the presence of Sir Oliver Duncan, wearing a white hat, Delia de Bagno, the Marquess and Marchioness of Huntly, Lady Joan Villiers, Mrs Kenneth Richards, Mr George Whigham, Mr Duncan Mackinnon with his new wife, Lady Duncan, Mrs George Whigham, Mr Bradley Campbell, and the Hon. Miss Eileen Brougham and Miss Margaret Whigham. Amidst the picturesque backdrop of the Nile River and the ancient ruins, an exciting engagement announcement was made. Miss Margaret Whigham, dressed elegantly in a summer dress, had recently become engaged to the Earl of Warwick during their holiday in Cairo. The news sparked a flurry of interest in the British press, fueling the intrigue surrounding the upper class society set. However, the engagement did not last long, as Margaret broke off the relationship just weeks before the wedding. Instead, she married Charles Sweeny the following year. Margaret's subsequent marriage to the Duke of Argyll in 1951 led to a high-profile divorce case that scandalized the country in 1963. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of these well-known individuals, capturing a moment of joy and excitement amidst the breathtaking beauty of Egypt's Aswan.
