This evocative photograph captures the final moments of President William McKinley's life as he lies at his desk in his private reception room at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, on September 14, 1901. Born on January 29, 1843, in Niles, Ohio, McKinley served as a Union soldier in the American Civil War before embarking on a political career. He was elected as the 25th President of the United States in 1896, and his second term began on March 4, 1901. Tragically, McKinley's presidency was cut short when he was assassinated by Leon Czolgosz on September 6, 1901, during the Temple of Music at the Pan-American Exposition. Czolgosz, an anarchist, shot McKinley twice in the abdomen, and despite doctors' best efforts, the President succumbed to his injuries 10 days later, on September 14. In this image, McKinley is shown lying on a couch, surrounded by a small group of men, including his personal secretary, George B. Cortelyou, who is seen leaning over him. The President's face is etched with pain and exhaustion, and his eyes are closed as he takes his final breaths.
