EDITORS COMMENTS
Petticoat Lane, London - Goulston Street: A Vibrant Hub of Fashion and Trade since the 17th Century This photograph captures the bustling scene of Petticoat Lane, London, on Goulston Street, circa 1920s. The area, located at the intersection of Wentworth Street and Middlesex Street, has been a renowned center for secondhand clothes and bric-a-brac trading since the early 17th century. The rich history of Petticoat Lane can be traced back to the influx of immigrant communities, particularly Huguenots and later Jews, who brought with them the traditions of clothing manufacture and trade. The area's reputation for affordable, high-quality clothing items quickly spread, attracting large crowds of shoppers from all walks of life. In this photograph, we see the vibrant atmosphere of the market in full swing. Clothes hang from the makeshift stalls, their colors and patterns creating a stunning mosaic against the cobblestone street. Shoppers, dressed in their Sunday best, browse through the racks, haggling with the vendors over prices. The crowds are thick, but the mood is jovial, as everyone seems to be enjoying the unique shopping experience. Despite a severe decline following World War II, the area was once again revitalized in the 1970s by an influx of Asian immigrants. Their influence brought new energy to the market, which continues to thrive today as one of London's most iconic fashion destinations. This photograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of Petticoat Lane, a place where fashion, tradition, and community intertwine to create a truly unique shopping experience.
