EDITORS COMMENTS
Petit Trianon C. 1805: An Elegant Escape from the Grandeur of Versailles The Petit Trianon, located within the expansive grounds of the Château de Versailles in France, stands as a testament to the elegance and refinement of the French monarchy during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This image, taken from Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the historical charm of the Petit Trianon as it appeared around 1805. The Petit Trianon, meaning "little triangular hill," was initially built as a hunting lodge for King Louis XV in 1687. However, it was transformed into a sumptuous retreat for Marie Antoinette by her husband, King Louis XVI, in the late 1700s. The queen sought solace from the grandeur and political intrigue of the royal court at Versailles, and the Petit Trianon provided the perfect escape. In this stunning elevation view, the Petit Trianon's elegant architecture is on full display. The symmetrical design, with its central pavilion and surrounding wings, is a masterclass in neoclassical architecture. The meticulously planned gardens, visible in the foreground, are a harmonious blend of formal and informal elements, with the avenue du Chateau leading the eye towards the main building. The Petit Trianon's history is intertwined with that of the French monarchy, and its walls have borne witness to moments of both joy and sorrow. Marie Antoinette and her lover, the Count of Axel Fersen, are believed to have met clandestinely within its walls during her affair. Later, the Petit Trianon served as a prison for Marie Antoinette and her family during the French Revolution. Today, the Petit Trianon stands as a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into the opulent world of the French monarchy and a reminder of the rich history that lies within the walls of the Château de Versailles.
