Peter I, also known as Peter Karadjordjevic, was the King of Serbia from 1903 until his abdication in 1918, and later served as the first monarch of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes from 1918 until 1921. Born on December 15, 1844, in Topola, Serbia, Peter was the eldest son of Prince Mihailo Obrenovic and his wife, Princess Natalija. In 1903, following the assassination of King Alexander Obrenovic and Queen Draga, Peter was proclaimed King of Serbia at the age of 58. His reign was marked by modernization efforts, including the establishment of a modern army and the expansion of education. However, Peter's rule was not without challenges. In 1914, he was forced to abdicate in favor of his son, Alexander, due to growing unrest and political instability. Peter went into exile in Switzerland, but returned to Serbia in 1917 when the Central Powers invaded during World War I. In November 1918, following the end of the war, Peter was once again proclaimed king, this time as the monarch of the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. He worked to unite the various ethnic groups within the new kingdom and promote unity and stability. However, Peter's reign was short-lived. In January 1921, he was forced to abdicate for a second time due to political unrest and economic instability. He went into exile once again, this time in Italy, where he lived until his death on August 16, 1921. This photograph captures Peter I in his later years, likely during his second reign as king of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. Despite the challenges he faced, Peter is remembered as a key figure in Serbian and Balkan history for his efforts to modernize Serbia and bring the various ethnic groups of the region together.
