Persian Dervish
Persian Dervish. Dervish or Darvesh in Persian usually refers to a person who is a seeker of the truth i.e. universal truth. Within the Islamic tradition such people are often known as Sufis, Sufi, people of the way or mystics and they come from every strata of society; here monetary considerations are inapplicable since the situation is that of a deep personal inner spiritual longing. There are in existence a number Sufi Orders many of which bear the name of a great saint and within these orders various practices have continued over the centuries in order to assist generations of seekers whose desire is to be brought to reality itself. It is said that the number of ways to reality/truth exceeds the number of grains of sand on the beach. It may be noted that this infinite number of ways to truth can even start at a point beyond religion, ultimately the truth is an univeral quality."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enigmatic figure of a Persian Dervish, a spiritual seeker deeply immersed in the pursuit of universal truth. The term "Dervish" or "Darvesh" in Persian culture refers to individuals who dedicate their lives to the quest for spiritual enlightenment, transcending societal boundaries and material wealth. Within the Islamic tradition, these individuals are often identified as Sufis, a mystical branch of Islam that emphasizes the inner dimensions of faith. The rich history of Sufism is marked by the existence of numerous orders, or Tariqahs, each preserving unique practices to guide seekers on their spiritual journey. Some of these orders are named after renowned saints, their teachings passed down through generations. This photograph, taken in 1908, showcases a Dervish from Turkey, a country with a rich Persian cultural heritage. The Dervish's distinctive attire, including his long, flowing robe and distinctive headdress, signifies his commitment to the ascetic lifestyle and his dedication to the esoteric dimensions of the faith.
