EDITORS COMMENTS
San Pedro de Alcantara, also known as Pedro de Alcantara Fernandez de Valbuena (1499-1562), was a Spanish Franciscan friar and mystic, renowned for his deep spiritual experiences and devotion to the Holy Spirit. This evocative image captures the moment of Pedro's inspiration, as the Holy Spirit descends upon him in the form of a dove. Born in Valladolid, Spain, Pedro joined the Franciscan Order at a young age and was known for his piety and asceticism. His spiritual experiences began in earnest in 1526, when he reported receiving the stigmata – the five wounds of Christ – in a vision. Over the next several decades, Pedro experienced numerous mystical encounters, including visions of the Virgin Mary and the Holy Spirit. This historical print depicts Pedro in the throes of one such encounter, as the Holy Spirit takes the form of a dove and alights upon his head. The serene expression on Pedro's face and the peaceful surroundings convey the deep sense of reverence and awe that accompanied these moments of divine inspiration. Pedro's spiritual experiences continued until his death in 1562, and he was later canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1672. Today, he is revered as a patron saint of Spain and is particularly invoked for protection against fire and for the spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit. This image offers a glimpse into the rich history of Spanish spirituality and the enduring legacy of San Pedro de Alcantara, whose deep connection to the Holy Spirit continues to inspire and uplift people around the world.
