EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the chaotic scene of the infamous Pazzi Conspiracy, an attempt by the Pazzi family to overthrow the powerful Medici family in Florence, Italy, in April 1478. With the support of Pope Sixtus IV, the Pazzi family, led by Lorenzo de' Medici's cousin, Jacopo de' Pazzi, hatched a plan to seize control of the city and eliminate the Medici threat. The conspiracy came to a head on the morning of April 26, 1478, as fighting broke out in the Chiesa del Riparata, a church in the heart of Florence. In the photo print, we see the chaos and violence of the moment, with men clashing swords and shields, and others fleeing in terror. The Medici forces, caught off guard, were initially outnumbered and outmaneuvered, but they soon rallied and turned the tide of the battle. The Pazzi Conspiracy was a pivotal moment in Florentine history, marking the end of the Medici's first reign and the beginning of a period of instability and political upheaval in the city. Pope Sixtus IV, who had initially supported the Pazzi family, was eventually forced to distance himself from the conspiracy and condemn the violence. The Medici eventually regained power, and their influence in Florence would continue for centuries. This historical print, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a vivid and compelling glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the tumultuous world of 15th-century Italy and the dramatic events that shaped its history.
