Originally built in 1929 as the workhouse hospital for the Barton Upon Irwell Poor Law Union, this institution was a stark reminder of the social and economic realities of the time. The workhouse system, a product of the Elizabethan Poor Law of 1601, was designed to provide relief for the destitute and able-bodied poor in exchange for hard labor.
